SpongeBob SquarePants Creation and Introduction to the Show

One of the most popular shows today on Nickelodeon is SpongeBob SquarePants. It is the story of a sponge who lives in a pineapple house next to his grouchy neighbor Squidward and best friend Patrick Star. Spongebob was created by Stephen Hillenburg and debuted in 1999.

Stephen Hillenburg was born in August in 1961 in Fort Sill Oklahoma. He went to Savanna High school. Then went Humbolt state university and got a degree in natural resource planning and interpretation, he also got one marine biology. After graduation, he worked at the Orange County Ocean Institute teaching Marine Biology. Then a few years later he went to California institute of fine arts and got a Master of fine arts degree in animation. He has made many short films, a few have won awards. One year at a film festival he met Joe Murry (creator of Rocko’s modern life). Joe wanted Stephen to be a director on Rocko’s Modern life. Stephen accepted the job. When the show ended in 1996 he began make comic books about a sea sponge, after a while he changed it to a normal square sponge. He showed one of the writers on Rocko’s modern life. He told Stephen he should make in to a cartoon series. He got some people from Rocko’s modern life to help him make a pitch to send to Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon loved it. The first show of Spongebob played right after the 1999 Kids choice awards and has been going since.
